I am a certified and insured firearms instructor who has trained with some of the best in the industry, including Massad Ayoob, John Farnam, Jerry and Lena Miculek, Shannon Smith, and the Sig Sauer Academy. I hold numerous instructor certifications, including NRA Certified Instructor(EVERY Instructor rating except reloading), NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, SAFTEA Certified defensive pistol/defensive carbine instructor and RSO, NMLRA Certified instructor, and MA State LTC instructor. I am also MACE Civilian Instructor L1 Personal Defense Spray Certified.I also shoot competitively and am an IDPA certified safety officer. I also hold first aid and CPR certifications. You should note - this is not a 'Handgun 101' class. This class qualifies for Florida Law Chapter 790 LTC licensing. We spend a lot of time discussion the legal impacts of firearm ownership and use. Yes, you do still need an LTC in Florida for a bunch of valid reasons.
Defensive Handgun
Basic Defensive Handgun Training with John Tiso
This all-day class will be spent on the range and limited to a maximum of six students. We will have brief lectures during our lunch and breaks throughout the day. We will review fundamentals. However, this is not a not a handgun 101 class. This will be a high round count, defensive shooting class and requires fundamental handgun skills. You will need to be standing moving for extended periods of time. Contact the instructor directly for more information or for registration at firearmstraining@jtiso.com

Prerequisite
Attendance in a 1-day firearms fundamentals class, or equivalent experience. Ability to safely handle and shoot your firearm. Additionally, the student must be eligible to own a firearm. This can be proven by providing a valid firearms license or permit from any US state or proof of a recent background check. You will need very specific equipment (listed below). Contact the instructor and discuss any questions on the prerequisites or equipment.
Equipment Checklist
Full sized or compact semi-automatic handgun (example: Glock 17/19 or Sig P320) with 3-4 standard capacity magazines (standard=15 or more rounds)
OWB (outside the waistband) Holster – should be non-collapsing – we like the Comp-Tac “International” or similar (suggested, a non-collapsing holster made for frequent draw and re-holster and no ‘serpa’ holsters)
Ammunition - 350-500 rounds of full metal jacket factory fresh target ammo (no reloads)
Mag Carrier(s) – dual or twin open top non-collapsing mag carriers (hard shelled non-collapsing)
Safety Gear – Anti-shatter eyewear or safety glasses, ear protection (electronic ear muffs strongly suggested)
Dress/clothing
NO open toe shoes. A brimmed hat is recommended for both protection from the sun and deflection of spent cartridges. Please do not dress like a character from The Matrix or in all camo or hunting gear. Sturdy jeans or clothes from 511 Tactical are fine, as well as a strong belt are a must. Your belt should be able to support your firearm and mag carrier and should be leather or study nylon. Wear clothing that is functional and comfortable to be on the range the whole day. Try to dress as close as possible to your normal every day, while considering protection from the sun, as well as accommodating a belt. A cover/concealment garment such as a large shirt or vest that can be worn over your gun should be brought. If time permits we may perform an optional exercise to draw guns from concealment.
Food/Beverage/Comfort/Additional Items
Restrooms are available on the premises. However, food and potable water are not. Bring plenty of both, as well as a packed lunch. You should bring comfortable seating for breaks. Note taking items, sunscreen, bug spray, rain gear are highly recommended.

Cancellation Policy
Instructor canceled class – full refund. Student cancelled class - if the student’s spot is filled with another student full refund, otherwise cancellation without student’s spot filled 60% refund. Students removed from class for egregious safety violations will not be given a refund.
